Discovering the concept of Adaptive Reuse completely changed my perspective, and now I see examples all around me! In architecture, adaptive reuse involves transforming an existing building for a new purpose. Unlike traditional renovation, it doesn't just update a structure to continue its original function. Instead, it repurposes buildings for a new use, essentially generating a fresh property without the need for total demolition or starting from scratch.

I have enjoyed so many of these ingenious Reuse, including the transformation of the High Line in NYC, the conversion of Alameda's Del Monte Cannery into residential lofts, the development of a climbing gym in West Oakland's Pacific Pipe, and the reuse of Brooklyn Basin's old cargo ship terminal.

Turning my attention back to my home base of Berkeley, I drive on San Pablo Avenue countless times each week, there are so many empty buildings along this corridor waiting to be reused, reimagined, respected, revitalized, repurposed, redeemed...

My family now proudly reside in an Adaptive Reuse project, the former California Office Machine building. Stephen showed me how to achieve his vision of doing one building at a time on San Pablo Ave. I will show you our next project soon.
